Bergamot is most useful for it’s ANTISPASMODIC and ANTI-DEPRESSIVE properties. It’s chemistry makes it beneficial for abdominal cramps, restless leg syndrome, depression, and anxiety.
Latin Name: Citrus bergamia
Plant Origin: Italy
Botanical family: Rutaceae
Plant Part: fruit rind, organic
Processed: cold pressed
Chemical family: monoterpenes, monoterpenols, and esters
Aroma: Citrus, sweet, tart
CHEMISTRY & SAFETY
CHEMISTRY: Bergamot has significant percentages of d-limonene, linalol, and linalyl acetate. The linalol/linalyl acetate synergy makes it skin friendly and calming like lavender angustifolia, yet with the added benefit of d-limonene (~35%). d-limonene is a skin penetration enhancer. This is helpful when making a blend for an acute issue. It’s also an immune system stimulant, and antibacterial.
SAFETY: Phototoxic. Avoid direct sunlight (natural or artificial) for 12-24 hours after applying to the skin. May cause burning to the skin if exposed to direct sunlight. For external use only. Keep out of reach of children. Always dilute essential oils before applying to the skin and keep away from mucous membranes. If the oil is past it’s “use by” date or stored improperly, it may cause irritation and lose therapeutic value.
